These are today’s hotel design trends. Therefore, we will look at what can you do these days to create a hotel experience your guests like to come back to. And what is it that has developed to be chic in Hotels. As we know, design is not only a question of aesthetics, but also of functionality. Therefore, a lot of trends in hotel design, which emerged recently, are about amenities for the visitors. And so the mix of trends that is presented here, concerns as well the look of your hotel as it does concern the facilities of it. And the first trend we will look at is a mix of both. Because it is the design of the lobby, which makes it becomes one of the amenities.
Trends for the hotel lobby
The first modern trend we talk is about the hotel lobby. As the lobby used to be merely a place to check in and then go to your hotel room. But this concept of the hotel lobby has changed. As nowadays, the lobby has become a space for the guests to hang out in. So the lobby becomes a room inviting the guests to stay. And with this new concept, this place undergoes changes in its design concept. And those are that it is made more cozy and comfortable. Maybe plants are used and some artwork on the walls. So the trend is to make the lobby to much more resemble a living room. It goes without saying that a free Wi-Fi is a nice thing to offer for your hotel guests. Some hotels even think of their lobby as being a shared working space. So they set this room out for guests to work in. Which shows us a general idea that is the new paradigm of today’s hotel lobbies. It is a room which invites the guests to stay in it. Which actually seems to have been the original idea of the lobby design, which seems to have been neglected.
Facilities as a trend
There is a trend to offer facilities in a hotel. As more and more hotels want to keep the guests in their hotel. As usually the guests stayed in the hotel to sleep and maybe eat, but then they went away to visit other things. And more and more hotel owners want to change that by offering things in their luxury hotels for which the visitors would have usually left, in order to find these things maybe in the city. While the classic option for offering a hotel facility is a bar or a restaurant. Which is actually a very common thing in general for a hotel to offer. Therefore we find many hotels around the world who tradionally offer a bar or a hotel restaurant, which you can see in our section about bar design, where we look at the most famous bars in the world, of which many are actually in hotels. And a good way to have a hotel bar or a restaurant is to rent the space to people who open up such an establishment. But the trend does not stop with this classic hotel feature. As the owners want to offer a broeder spectrum of activities for the guests. And those other facilities can include workspaces. Because recently we had the trend of working from home. But if you think about it: the remote working trend does not necessarily mean that people have to work from home. Because remote working just states, that you are not at your classic place of work. So one trend faciliates another, and therefore bars can be designed as shared work spaces. Which of course offers a certain kind of feeling when you work in a bar with people around you. While it seems to be specifically the younger generation, who likes to work in this way. But a public work environment does not only serve the needs of those who stay all day in the space. Because such a room moght also attract guests like businessmen, who even in their holidays want to check their work even though they are on vacation. But also yoga studies can be an addition to your hotel design, which is also is a trend at the moment. But it does not have to be yoga, because also other fitness rooms are a trend. And public hotel rooms to do sports in are not the only hotel trend, which is about the body, Becuase also massage studios can be put into your hotel design concept, following the trend.
High-tech as a hotel design trend
More and more technology comes into hotel design. Because it is a new millennium. We have seen the impact of AI, and we understand, that people wish to find the possibilities of a digital world also in your hotel. And there are several ideas you can use, to live up to the computerized world, in order to follow this new trend.
While one possibility to encounter this phenomenon is the new trend of for example putting tablets in the guest rooms. On those tablets, the guest then can chat with the hotel personnel. And so they can use the tablets in order to call the room service. Or the tablet can have an app which shows the meal times for the hotel restaurant.
Also on the tablets there could be Netflix. While it seems to us, that Netflix does not offer a plan for hotels, but instead the visitors just find the Netflix app on the hotel TV and can use their own account. Even though, we do not understand why Netflix does not offer the hotels a way of paying them so that Netflix is open through the hotel account, because a guest using Netflix in the hotel with his or her own account, already pays. While with a hotel account however small the fee would be, Netflix would also earn money even from customers who already pay, as the hotel would pay an additional fee for them. But it seems to us that the company did not yet see this and so until now you just can offer the platform for people who already are customers to the streaming services.
While yet another idea of getting some high-tech into your hotel is by using apps that visitors can install on their smartphones, in order to open their hotel room, without using a key. And some hotels now even feature robots that do jobs in the hotel like delivering things to the room as room service.
Or another idea is this: do your guests still press a button to change the room temperature? Because nowadays, people can also speak to the room computer and tell them stuff like that. And this concept is called smart rooms.
While these ideas for hotel design are something you can quite easily implement, this next trend is not for everybody, probably. As some hotels offer room service done by robots. And others let robots clean. And while it is one thing to put out a few of these vacuum cleaner disc robots, having a robot carrying drinks to the guest rooms might pose some more effort on the side of the hotel owner.
Themed rooms trend
Another hotel design trend are themed rooms. And that means that the room is in a certain style. For example the whole room looks like a whine cellar. Or a room design might remind of the sixties. Or there might be a spook room. Or the hotel might feature a jungle room.
The idea behind this trend is of course to offer an experience for the visitor. If your room is themed, then you can be sure, that the guest will not have the same thing in anotehr hotel. While postmodern thinking and performance studies theory emphasizes, that things like themed rooms are as well an art form as theater. Think Instagram
For people today, it is a trend to post their holiday on Instagram. Many hotels now imply picture worthy attributes for their guests to take a photo in front of, to show it on social media. So that means that people with followers on social media sites create an article about your hotel and might also mention its name. That is a free advertising.
So maybe you can build a nice decoration, that works well as a background for taking a picture for a digital diary.
