These are always trends. And some are classy while others are innovative. And as an interior designer you have two questions: What is trendy at the moment? And: Will this be out of trend at some point. As an interior designer on Youtube once said: A white kitchen will always be in trend. While a green kitchen might be trending today but not anymore at a later point. So for example open shelving was a big trend of the year 2021. But will it be in trend 2022. So a friend said to me: I don’t want open shelving. As I do not want people to look at my cooking equipment. As there is always stuff that is not nice to look at. And that is giving us an interesting thought about trends. And that is: what is good will always be in trend. Whereas what does not really work might be trendy but it will be out of fashion again at some point. Also I say: Cookware gets dusty when it stands out in the open. And inside of cupboards no dust gets onto the pots and pans. So kitchen cabinets are there for a reason. They make sense. So they will be an ongoing trend. The same is true for white kitchen design. As white gives the idea of something being clean. And in a kitchen you just want that feeling. So when it comes to trends with this you have a pretty good idea of determining which trends are there to stay. And always remember: many things are there for a reason. Also another big trend of the year 2001 was marble or stone backsplashes. So will this be still in trend later? Well: Stone is one of the basic building materials. And even if this goes out of trend you can guess that at some point it will be trending again. So this also gives us another idea to consider when thinking about trends. As there is not only usability that makes a design worthwile. Also of course there is aesthetics. And this gives us a point of measuring the duration of color trends. As those colors will stay in trend longer the more beautiful they are. But given that everybody has their own sense of which color palette is beautiful we can not actually see by this means how long a color trend will last. But then again think of another thing. What in the world would make you follow a certain color trend. As you know it will not last. So you as an interior designer should toss aside all color trends and design in the colors you love. Or if you think about your customer create an interior design in the colors which they love. So understanding what makes sense in a kitchen or a bathroom design gives you a good understanding of which trends are here to stay. And understanding which trends are not here to stay gives you the freedom to ignore them. For what use is it to build a living room so that it will look oldfashioned in a short time just because other people did it like that. As then you can as well create an interior that will also be out of style soon but which then at least features the favourite colors of the house owners.
